How to change company authentication code

You can change your company’s authentication code at any time. How to change your company authentication code with Companies House is easy. Follow the step-by-step guide below.

Change company authentication

1You must log in to Companies house’s web filing service using your email address and password registered with Companies House for web filing service.
2You must also enter your company number and the authentication code issued by Companies House if this is the first time you are changing your authentication code.

If you have misplaced your original authentication code issued to your company by Companies House, you can request it again. It will be sent to your company’s registered office address.
3Once login into the web filing service dashboard, you will see “company authentication” on the left-hand menu. Click on it.
4You will be asked to choose a new 6 character code and re-enter the code again. then you click the “change code” button to activate the change.

Take note that Companies House will send a letter to your registered office address to confirm your authentication code has been changed. For this reason, it is important you make sure you are able to access mails sent to your company’s registered office address.

It is very important you treat your authentication code like your debit card and credit card pin because anyone who has access to your authentication code can file information for your company with Companies House.

Correspondingly, If the person is no longer authorized to file information for your company then change your authentication.

Prefer papers filings

If you prefer to submit papers filings instead of electronically with Companies House, you can cancel your authentication code.

Tick the box “I wish to cancel the company authentication code”. Then click the “cancel code” button. Take note that once you cancel your authentication code, you will not be able to submit your confirmation statement, company accounts, director appointment, and so on electronically.

UK SIC 2007

You would require to choose at least one SIC code from the UK SIC 2007 codes list below when completing your confirmation statement for Companies House. The code you choose must closely represent your principal business activity. You can have more than one SIC codes. SIC codes explained here. The Office for National Statistics uses the UK SIC 2007 codes for statistical reports purposes.

File your confirmation statement

You can submit your confirmation statement to Companies House through web filing or by post on the printed paper form. If you are to submit your confirmation statement online, the SIC codes listed in the web filing dashboard is current and up to date the UK SIC 2007. You have zero chance of your confirmation statement being rejected due to using the incorrect SIC codes.

If you are to submit a printed paper confirmation statement form, then you would need to be mindful that the SIC codes you specify in your confirmation statement form are the UK SIC 2007 version, not the old SIC codes.

Your company accounts

You must also provide a description of your principal business activities in your yearly statutory accounts. Usually, the business activities disclosure is on the director’s report.

Correct mistakes on your Confirmation Statement

You can correct mistakes on your Confirmation Statement with Companies House. The Companies Act 2006 only allows one Confirmation Statement to be filed for a confirmation period. In other words, you cannot replace the entire confirmation statement you already filed with Companies House with a new one for the same period. However, there is a way to do it. You must apply to Companies House.

How to correct mistakes on your Confirmation Statement

If it has come to light that your last confirmation statement contained errors, you can Second Filing to correct mistakes on your confirmation statement.

The correct way to do it is, you complete the form RP04 on paper together with the part of the confirmation statement form that contains errors.

For example, if the details of the Person with Significant Control (PSC) was incorrect, then you would complete Part 5 of the CS01 form only. Likewise, if your statement of capital is incorrect, then you would complete part 2 of the CS01 form.

Thereafter, you only send your RP04 and the relevant part of the CS01 form with the corrected information to Companies House. Do not send the whole CS01 form to Companies House, not even the front page of the CS01 form.

Another document you must include is the PR03 if your company has opted in the PROOF scheme.

To amend your company accounts already submitted to Companies House, simply send in your amended accounts and mark the account as “AMENDED”. Then, Companies House will publish both accounts on your public record.

Reminder to submit your confirmation statement

Reminder to submit your confirmation statement is the help Companies House provide generously. Companies House sends out reminders to your registered office address when your confirmation statement is due.

Companies House want to remind you to submit your confirmation statement on time

It is a criminal offence for not sending in your confirmation statement. Additionally, you can be fined up to £5000 and risk your company being struck off the register.

Because of Companies House only send reminders to your registered office, it is vital that you keep your registered office up to date with Companies House.

For example, if you recently moved to a new office you must notify Companies House of your new registered office address. Use the form AD01 to notify Companies House.

Alternatively, you may sign up for an email reminder to submit your confirmation statement when it is due. To sign up for the email reminder, you need to login to your web filing service and opt-in for the email alert. You would require your authentication code to use the Companies House web filing service.

You must keep safe your authentication code because it is the electronic equivalent of your company director and secretary signatures.

Other than your confirmation statement, Companies House also sends reminders to your registered office when your company accounts are due.
